The history of Advanced Research Institute for Science and Engineering (RISE) originally started with Science and Engineering Research Laboratory, established in 1940. It was the research institute attached to Science and Engineering Department at the beginning, however, Science and Engineering Research Laboratory was reorganized as an institution directly affiliated to the University in 1943. Livelily research activity has been developed especially in Science and Engineering section ever since then, and Science and Engineering Research Laboratory was developmentally reorganized to Advanced Research Institute for Science and Engineering (RISE) in the opportunity of establishing building 55 in Okubo campus in 1993.

The policy of RISE is "contributing to development of science technology and human welfare with basic and advanced research of science and engineering including interdisciplinary research, having cope to society" such as mentioned in the Regulation of the Institute. This spirit still lives on among todayユs professors. RISE is currently structured by approximately 1000 researchers (23 full-time professors (including research associates), 270 internal concurrent professors, 100 visiting professors and 600 external researchers), and they have made great contributions to more than 100 research projects supported by external funds. These projects are classified into 3 sections: Scientific Research Section, Technological Research Section and Environmental Research Section. The main research point was moved to Building 55 in Okubo campus, and Kikui-cho Campus and Honjo Campus have been developed as satellite institutes. These campuses are supported by research grants from ヤHi-Tech Research Center Projectユ and ヤ Science Frontier Promotion Instituteユ in the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. A new satellite laboratory has started from April 2001 in Kita-Kyushu Science and Research Park in Fukuoka based on cooperation with companies in Kyushu district as well as with Asian research institutions.

Recently, RISE in close cooperation with the Intellectual Property Center is actively reacting to the demands of collaboration between industries and educational institutions, and the transfers of the research results to the industrial world.
