The Science and Engineering Research Laboratory, which has more than a 50-year history, reorganized itself as the Advanced Research Institute for Science and Engineering (RISE) in April, 1993. We are pleased that the research results that began to be cultivated during the era of the former research institute have played a pioneering role in our countryユs science-and- engineering field.

In 1998, we held a symposium entitled "Symbiosis of Natural Environment and Human Society", where we discussed RISE research as well as its future ideal image.

In order to make the transition into a world-class institution in the field of science-and- engineering-research, we have begun engaging in research-oriented activities that are suitable for an organization of such caliber based on the concept called "A leap to the research organization esteemed from the industrial world (Towards a Research University)". RISE is an institution that aims to synthesize various viewpoints by creating innovative linkages among research projects that are useful to both society and its citizens.

One of the activities that we are focusing on is intellectual and human exchange. We are promoting research with invited visiting professors and researchers from national and international universities or companies, besides brining up young researchers.

One of the advantages enjoyed by Universities and Research Institutions is the ability to access general perspective and powering collaborative research, therefore through variety of research project RISE has been working to achieve the harmonization between knowledge, skills and philosophy of Natural Science, Social Science, and Liberal Arts. Furthermore, Waseda University, as the University of directly benefiting to citizens, will accept practical perspective to make the best use of it for special researches.

RISE opens its own research to public, and is also considered as an institute for joint research of international industry, universities and national organs, and for entrust research of specific theme. RISE is always providing research community for people from all quarters to accomplish creative science and engineering research with full use of their research experience.

One of the main activities of RISE is to offer the achievement of research to expand the research potential, RISE set a number of satellite laboratories that serve as significant component of RISE in persuit of its objective.

RISE has been improving its research basis with opening Honjo Campus in Saitama Prefecture in 1998, and new research facility in Kikui-cho Campus for high-tech research center project. In April 2001, RISE Kyushu Laboratory opened in Kita-Kyushu district. Activity of RISE Satellite Laboratory will be more application-oriented by setting cooperation with industries and society.
