This project is to create the intelligent database by using the techniques of informatics to identify the relationship between polymorphism of human gene and the individual validation in the efficacy of and tolerability to drugs. This research laboratory was established in April 2000, in collaboration with NIHS (National Institute of Health Sciences) and Waseda University.
Recently, Bioinformatics became crucial not only for the research of drug development, but also for broader areas of various studies including biological researches. In this new field of Bioinformatics, the US has been preceded Japan or Europe. Because the genetic research requires the enormous information processing, the technique of informatics with making full use of computers is indispensable, and the promotion of this technique and its training to scientists have been expected.
To accomplish the above, this laboratory particularly focuses the drug metabolizing enzyme that has become the center of attention in the drug development. To clarify the relationship between the polymorphism and the activity of each enzyme to metabolize (detoxify or deactivate) the drug, we are collecting the existing information from Internet and analyzing the data to identify the rule between them. For doing this research, the advanced technique to connect IT (information technology) with biochemistry is necessary, which contributes the promotion of the new scientific field expected in this university. In the future, this laboratory will widely collaborate with other universities and research centers, based on the relationship with NIHS at the core.
